On April 27, 2014, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office Callaway Substation responded to the scene of a traffic crash in the 5800 block of Highway 22 in Callaway.
After an investigation into the crash, it has been determined that the driver of the car traveling west on Highway 22, David Anthony Ortiz, did cross the center line into the eastbound lane crashing head on into a vehicle that was traveling east. This resulted in critical injuries to the driver and two passengers in the vehicle that was struck. One of the passengers had to undergo emergency surgery for internal injuries and was placed on life support for several days after the crash. BCSO Investigators learned Ortiz had consumed a large amount of alcohol and was reported driving recklessly just prior to the crash. Ortiz’s blood alcohol level was .216. This is more than two and a half times the legal limit of .08.
Warrants have been obtained for Ortiz for DUI with Serious Bodily Injury and felony Driving on a Suspended License.
David Anthony Ortiz, age 25, is currently being held in the Volusia County Jail on unrelated charges. A hold will be placed for him to be transferred to Bay County as soon as the charges in Volusia County are resolved.
